There was a legend of a boy who made a bet with the devil. As with all things, the boy bet the only thing that he had, which was his soul. The devil smiled, having never lost a bet, he accepted the bet. The boy stated that he would only enter the competition under certain circumstances.
“Oh, and what conditions would they be?” The devil inquired.
“I have to be the smartest person in the world. I want to be so smart that I could outwit even you.”
“I see. And is that your only request?” The devil seriously considered this. For such a request would require certain conditions to be met.
“Of course it’s my only request, with the best brains in the world. Why would I ever have any need of anything else?”
“Yes, I see. But forgive me for I am an idiot and you are the smartest in all of the world.”
And so the bet was on and the boy was born into the world. Born as the smartest man alive, smarter than the devil himself.
Being the smartest man in the world, he attempted to lead humanity in its effort to eradicate suffering and misery of the world. To free all of humanity from the clutches of the devil and evil itself. He had plans. Great plans. To relieve the world of its economic woes, he designed a new system of economic modelling. Not communism, not capitalism. It was something else. But the people, for they were idiots, could not understand the new economic model and called it nonsense. So the economic model was abandoned and he moved on to the next idea.
The next idea he attempted to preach love and understanding to all of the people in the world. Some took up his flag and contended that the idea of love and understanding was the pathway to freedom. However, the same people who preached love and understanding were the same people who were cruel and ignorant in their actions. For they only spoke the words of love and understanding, but did not practice love and understanding.
The boy’s last hope was the annihilation of the Earth and all of its inhabitants. He had become so dismayed and betrayed by his fellow human beings on his previous crusades of peace that he sought nothing else but an end to the world. Through ignorance and the prestige of others, he was jailed and tortured. He would end up a dead man and lose his bet with the devil after all.
For what are wits worth in a land full of idiots and ignorance? And that was the devil’s trick. For you could be the smartest person in all of the world. But when no-one else in the world understands you, for if you speak of things that they cannot understand through their own lack of intelligence, then you are cursed and doomed to suffer.
And upon his death, the boy returned to the devil and the devil smiled. “Bet you weren’t expecting that, were you? Nobody wins a bet with me.”
